Are Your Parents Falling for Drugs? List of Drugs that Contribute to Dizziness and Falls

By Ron Finley

One of the leading causes of falls for seniors is side-effects from medication.

Here are just some of the types of medications to look out for:
  • High blood pressure medications
  • Sleep aids
  • Pain relievers
  • Anti-anxiety prescriptions
  • Sedating antihistamines
  • Diuretics
  • Anticonvulsants
  • Antidepressants
  • Tranquilizers
  • Cough medicines containing alcohol
  • Overactive bladder medications
  • Gastrointestinal antispasmodic meds

Keep in mind that this list is not all-inclusive. Be sure to ask the physician and pharmacist. Drug interactions, or taking the medications at incorrect times, with the wrong food/drinks or with alcohol can also cause problems. Read all the directions carefully and make sure your aging parent or loved one understands the correct usage for all medications, including over-the counter and herbal or homeopathic remedies.
