Gastroesophageal Reflux (GER) and Gastroesophageal
Reflux Disease (GERD)

By Joyce Sokolik

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is common and occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter opens spontaneously and allows some of the stomach content to rise into the esophagus. Sometimes this is referred to as acid reflux because some of the acidic digestive juices rise with the food. If acid reflux occurs more than twice a week it is considered gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD. It also is caused by the backflow of stomach acid into the lower esophagus. The burning sensation, or heartburn, can be felt in the chest, the throat and the nose. Heartburn is not the only symptom of GERD. A small percentage of people may experience a chronic cough, laryngitis, hoarseness or asthma. Do not treat yourself with over-the-counter antacids if you experience heartburn more than three to four times per week. Contact your doctor. Your doctor should also be contacted if you have difficulty swallowing or a chronic cough. Some people notice improvements with weight loss and the following recommendations:

  1. Avoid drinking liquids 1 hour before meals and 1 hour after meals.
  2. Do not bend over, lie down or exercise vigorously after eating.
  3. Relax before and after meals to digest food well.
  4. Eat at least 3 hours before bedtime
  5. If symptoms occur when you lie down elevate the head of your bed (not just the pillows) 6-8 inches with wooden blocks.
  6. Do not wear tightly fitted clothing.
  7. To avoid swallowing air avoid straws, carbonated beverages, chewing gum, hard candy and talking with food in the mouth. The above lead to an increase in the amount of swallowed air which, in turns leads to belching and reflux.
  8. Avoid peppermint, spearmint, beverages with caffeine, and chocolate.
  9. Have the following in moderation as tolerated: strong tea, alcohol, garlic, onions, tomato juice, tomato sauce, carbonated beverages, citrus juices and citrus fruits.
  10. Decrease the amount of fatty foods in your diet, especially fried foods.
  11. Get adequate amounts of protein and high fiber foods.
  12. Sleep on your left side.
  13. If you smoke, stop.

People react to foods differently. Be aware of your individual sensitivities by keeping a food journal.
