Capturing seniors' stories while she still can

by David Bell (Sarasota Herald-Tribune)

icarevillage founder Jamie Spooner interviewing Sonia Fuentes, cofounder of the National Organization for Women

Sarasota, Florida (February 20, 2010)  Sonia Fuentes has rarely felt fear in her life -- a trait she credits to her Jewish immigrant father, who brought his family to America from Germany just before Hitler's genocide began.

"If I was ever afraid of something, he said, 'don't be,'" Fuentes said. "He said, 'What's the worst thing that can happen?'"

Fuentes, a resident of The Meadows, learned a new language, graduated from law school, and in 1965 became one of the few women hired at the newly created U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which enforced job discrimination laws.

When she saw that enforcement fail, Fuentes in 1966 cofounded the National Organization for Women, proving that her father's lesson had shaped not only her future, but also the country's future.

This week, Fuentes shared her past and her power of conviction with a camera crew on the back porch of her home. She is one of seven local senior citizens participating in a documentary series aimed at preserving the stories of their generation. More...
